How to Choose a Poster Frame — Five Finishes, One Price
Five frame options, one flat price across four of them. The merchant's feed carries only finish names and prices, but its storefront publishes the construction, and it is the same for every framed print in this catalog (checked on the merchant's own product pages, October 2026): pine wood frames, 0.79–0.98in thick and 0.4–0.6in wide, with shatterproof plexiglass instead of glass. So the finishes differ only in colour — the comparison below is about which colour serves which artwork.
The five options
| Option | At 12×18in | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Unframed | $41 | You already own a frame, or want a custom mount. The print ships as the print. |
| Black frame | $75 | Photography, bold graphics, jazz and poster art with strong lines. The default that rarely fails. |
| White frame | $75 | Botanical, Japanese and light-toned prints; bright rooms where black would shout. |
| Wood frame | $75 | Vintage travel, landscapes and warm palettes — softens formality. |
| Dark wood frame | $75 | Classical subjects, moody art, traditional rooms; the most "furniture-like" finish. |
Full prices for every size are in the true cost of framing. Because finishes cost the same at each size, choose by the artwork and the room, never by price:
- Match the frame to the darkest or lightest dominant tone in the print — our product pages label each design's dominant colour.
- In a gallery wall, keep frames in one finish per wall; mixing finishes is the most common reason walls look accidental.
- Dark rooms forgive dark frames; bright rooms rarely forgive white ones on white walls — the print disappears into its mount.
Finish by artwork colour — with examples
| Finish | Choose it when | See it on |
|---|---|---|
| Black | High-contrast, graphic art — etchings, comets, bold festival line-work. The frame disappears; the contrast does the talking. | 1882 Comet Poster Print · 1988 Central Park Jazz Fest Poster |
| White | Light, bright artwork, and anything going on a pale wall — the frame recedes and the wall colour joins the composition. | 1986 Central Park Jazz Festival Poster · Aperol Spritz Cocktail Poster |
| Wood | Warm-toned art — ochres, ambers and bookish browns meet the frame halfway. | 1991 National Library Week Poster · 2025 National Library Week Poster |
| Dark wood | Deep, saturated or strongly graphic designs that want a frame with gravity. | 1882 Comet Poster Print · Abstract Chess Board Poster Print |
Every finish costs the same at every size in this catalog, so this table is the whole decision. The examples are not stock photos: each is a print whose own curator's note — the note printed on its product page — recommends that finish, so the pairing advice here and on the product pages can never drift apart.
